The holiday season is upon us, and oh how it crept up quickly! We’re running around making sure we’ve gotten all of our gifts for friends and family, but let’s not forget our nannies, mannies and other household staff. Gifting during the holiday season is something that not only benefits employees, but benefits employers, as well. The kind gesture of presenting them with a gift is sure to remind them how appreciated their work is. In return, you’ll be sure to be remembered as a caring family, hopefully ensuring more stellar employees in the future.
It is standard to gift your nanny with a 1-2 weeks end of the year bonus, so please keep that in mind. However, we’ve compiled a list of 15 examples (excluding the bonus) that will, hopefully, give you some ideas for the holidays.
  1. Detail your nanny’s car (If your nanny is using their own vehicle, this could be a great suggestion. Who knows if there’s been a spilt cup of milk or not.)
  2. Gift Cards  (Macy’s, Amazon, local mall, etc..)
  3. Pedicure/Manicure (This may be great for your nanny or manny if you’ve notice that they like to keep up on their hardworking hands and feet!)
  4. Massage (Can’t hurt to ask first! Some people aren’t comfortable with massages due to the close physical contact)
  5. Salon gift card (Could be used for their hair, eyebrows, skin, etc..  maybe aim towards a reputable salon that provides multiple services)
  6. Extra paid time off added to their contract for the next year (Nanny burnout is real.)
  7. Gift basket (This can be a heartwarming gift if you have a close relationship with your nanny and or manny and have really gotten to know their interests.)
  8. Homemade gift from the children
  9. Fitness gear (Fitbit, membership to a gym, specific class or studio if you’ve noted that your nanny or manny has taken a genuine interest in their physical health)
  10. Alexa (Maybe you use one and your nanny has fallen in love with it!)
  11. Meal delivery (HelloFresh, Blue Apron, etc. This can be a perfect gift, especially if your nanny or manny works long hours; it can really help cut down on time meal prepping at home.)
  12. A solo weekend away (If you feel comfortable and know they have a partner, you can offer to include them in this mini getaway. Note: This doesn’t have to be a luxury trip to Paris. This can easily be an affordable little trip within your own state.)
  13. Let them go home early for the holidays
  14. Home baked goods
  15. Subscription to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc..

For families with nannies, mannies or other household staff working with them for the holidays:

We encourage you to show some extra appreciation. Since we specialize in travel and temporary placements, we thought we’d throw in a spin for those who have household staff working during the holidays.
For some employees, this may be a tough decision as they could be missing their friends and family back home. However, they love their work, your kiddos, and/or traveling, so they’ve decided to spend it with you. Whether you are traveling during Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or another holiday, check in with your them and see if there are any accommodations that would make them feel especially appreciated.
Here’s a short-but-sweet list of options you may be able to offer your nanny or household employee during the holiday season:
  1. Let them off early. Whatever holiday your nanny celebrates, letting them off even an hour or two early will be appreciated. They’ll have extra time to contact their loved ones and spend some time with them virtually.
  2. If they’re working on a holiday, paying them time in a half will be
  3. Give them the option to eat out alone. This may sound a bit strange, but it can often be a huge decompressor for people. Of course offer to have them at your family dinner, but let them know that you won’t be offended with whatever option they choose and that you want them to enjoy themselves.
  4. If you have the time and resources, give your nanny a day to themselves. This  is a fantastic way for your nanny to relax and get refreshed for the rest of your time together.
We hope that this list will be an asset to you during the holidays! Make sure to remember how hard your household employees are working and to thank them accordingly.
