It’s that time again! This week we are introducing a Charlotte, NC Nanny who continues to show her love and dedication to assisting families in raising healthy, happy kiddos. World, meet Shonna Ratchford.
What’s the most difficult situation you’ve faced as a nanny and how did you handle it?
Going from working in a preschool to nannying was a big transition for me. I really loved the classroom setting as well as the adult interaction with the rest of the staff and didn’t really anticipate how different my days would be. I quickly learned that Charlotte has a fantastic community of nannies and SAH moms though, and just plugged into it. There are tons of fun story times, play dates & other meet ups to keep cabin fever from setting in!
What is your favorite age range and why?
I’ve worked with all ages for years and can honestly say I don’t have a favorite! It’s amazing how each age has its own unique set of development. I love connecting with kids at whatever stage they’re in, it’s very fulfilling to encourage their growth and learning in positive ways so that they’ll be able to navigate the world positively and confidently.
Do you think too much technology in a child’s life is
a problem?
Absolutely! I’m a big believer that too much tech not only limits a child’s ability to socialize with others, but it also robs them of a healthy development of creativity. There’s also the fact that it’s overstimulating to their senses; their little systems are on overload and it’s hard to come down from that and be calm and focused. I think it should only be a family-style event on a Saturday morning or Friday Family movie night, with the exception of an educational game or story for long car trips. Other than that, unplug and go PLAY!
