Navigating Food Allergies: The Top 12 Allergens and the Best Brands for Safe Eating
Food allergies can pose significant challenges, but understanding these common allergens can help you embrace food diversity while ensuring safety in your meals. For those with celiac disease and other allergies, knowing which foods to avoid is crucial. This guide will explore the top 12 allergens, highlight trusted brands that offer allergen-friendly products, and suggest where you can find them in grocery stores.
The AllergyAde inititative was recently launched by our CEO and Founder, Leigh Roberson, to raise awareness about allergies beyond gluten. Having her own autoimmune disorder has made navigating food challenging, and she is passionate about supporting our community with safe brands that prioritize health. We are committed to promoting allergy friendly, dye-free and chemical-free options to ensure that everyone can be aware of safe and delicious foods or products.
The top allergens recognized for severe reactions include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, sesame, mustard, celery, and lupin. For instance, milk is commonly found in dairy products, baked goods, and processed foods. Brands like So Delicious and Almond Breeze offer a wide range of dairy-free alternatives, which you can find at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Target. If you are allergic to nuts Oatly, Ripple, and Pacific Foods offer nut free milk options. Our favorite dairy free alternatives for yogurt are coconut based and are Cocoyo and Culina. They are super simple and have amazing probiotics! Eggs, often present in baked goods and mayonnaise, can be substituted with products from Just Egg and Ener-G, available at stores like Whole Foods, Kroger, and Walmart. Please note that many of these egg replacements do have flaxseed in them. So be cautious.
Peanuts are prevalent in snacks and many Asian cuisines, but brands such as SunButter, Wowbutter and OatHaus provide delicious peanut-free alternatives, found at Target, Walmart, and health food stores. Tree nuts can often be found in granola and desserts, but you can enjoy coconut-based snacks from Nutiva and allergy-friendly treats from Enjoy Life Foods at Whole Foods, Safeway, and Natural Grocers and even Amazon. We also love Dang Coconut Chips for a sweet or salty snack.
Wheat is a significant concern for those with celiac disease, and gluten-free products from Glutino and Bob’s Red Mill can be found at Walmart, Whole Foods, and Safeway. We also are fans of Katz, King Arthur and Outer Aisle.
For soy, which is often present in tofu and soy sauce, Coconut Secret and Nature’s Path provide great alternatives. These can be found at Whole Foods, Sprouts Farmers Market, and health food stores. Sesame is commonly used in Asian cuisine, but you can find sesame-free dressings from Tessemae’s and Saffron Road at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Safeway. Mustard, often in condiments and marinades, can be avoided by choosing organic options from Annie’s and Primal Kitchen, which are available at Whole Foods, Kroger, and Target.
Celery is frequently found in soups and salads, but you can opt for celery-free stocks from Pacific Foods and soups from Amy’s Kitchen at Walmart, Whole Foods, and Natural Grocers. Lastly, for lupin, which appears in baked goods and pasta, Doves Farm and BFree Foods offer lupin-free options, found at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and specialty health food stores.
For individuals with celiac disease and other food allergies, embracing food diversity is not just about trying new flavors; it’s about finding safe options that fit their dietary needs. By exploring allergen-friendly brands and products, you can enjoy a rich variety of meals while managing allergies effectively. Always check labels, stay informed, and don’t hesitate to reach out to brands for clarification.
Navigating food allergies can be complex, but it’s entirely possible to maintain a diverse and enjoyable diet. With knowledge of the top allergens, a list of “safe” brands, and guidance on where to shop, you can confidently explore a world of flavors while keeping health and safety at the forefront. At AllergyAde, we are here to be a resource on your journey to safe and delicious eating. Please remember we are not medical professionals and you should always consult a health professional.
